Hi Junebug – they are the seed heads of Papaver somniferum (An annual poppy). They are just starting to form and later will turn into little pepper pots – spreading the seeds over the garden for next year.
Thanks for visiting
My annual poppies always disappear without a trace the following year. They probably end up growing in my neighbours’ gardens.
I’ve not tried somniferum so I might give them a go. The foliage looks easily recognisable so I shouldn’t mistake them for a weed (which might explain why the others disappeared!)
🙂 – My excuse for not weeding early in the year is because I might weed my self sown annuals by mistake. (That’s my excuse and I am sticking to it)
A gorgeous photo — there’s a serene and peaceful quality to it.
(Having been perhaps unduly influenced by the prevalence of cartoons & computer animation, I can’t help but ask: Can’t you just imagine little line-drawing faces on the three of them as the poppies bring their “heads” together for a cozy chat?)
Ha ha very good … Now you have got me thinking ……
